Bear and Hare are friends who like to do activities together, and since Bear REALLY loves fishing, that’s what they’re doing today. But will Bear catch a fish…or something else?
This is not a complicated book. There are only a handful of sentences and there’s repetition within them, so it seems like the book is even shorter than it is. This is all countered by the magical way the (few) words come together with the pictures to tell a story that has more going on than it initially seems.
The attention to detail is super. The twosome are well equipped for their expedition, with nets and rods and that ever important picnic. Hare has a special hat too, so he really looks the part. You can see what a good friend he is: he’s not that into fishing himself, but he knows it’s important to Bear so he goes along and sits by his side, supporting him. And how they celebrate together when Bear catches a big one!
The illustrations are lovely. I previously had the pleasure of reviewing Little Mouse's Big Book of Beasts by Emily Gravett which is a ‘sharper’ book with (potentially) scary beasts in, but Bear and Hare’s adventure is much softer. Everything’s happy, friendly, safe. Nothing to be scared of here. You might think bears can be scary, but this one is anything but. He’s a big old teddy, really, and you want to hug him rather than run away from him. It's a great book for bedtime too as it's a calming read.
This is a lovely first book for enjoying together with a simple story and lovely pictures to go with it. Things don’t immediately go to plan, but as Bear gets frustrated you just want to rub his back and tell him everything’s going to be fine in the end. And you know what? It is.
Thanks go to the publishers for supplying this book. we've also seen it as an equally gorgeous board book.
