Everyone knows the story of Elmer, the elephant who is not elephant colour, and this board book allows him to be introduced to an even younger audience.
Elmer is like Joseph’s technicolour dreamcoat. Red and yellow and pink and purple and blue, and every other colour you can think of. All the other elephants are grey. Uniform, matching, a little bit boring. But when you are different, you do start to wonder. When the other elephants are laughing, is it because you are funny, or is it because you’re different and they’re making fun of you? Elmer is no longer too sure, and decides to find a way to blend in with everyone else, and not be the laughing stock any more.
Fitting in can feel important whatever your age, and this book is a sweet way to introduce the topic of differences between people and celebrating diversity. The book may be about elephants but the moral isn’t.
This board book edition is everything you would hope for – really sturdy pages but with an almost wipe-clean glossy finish. Bright, bubbling illustrations that come to life on every page. Cute elephants and other animals (who are pleasingly polite, you will notice). The ending is brilliant and could lead to all manner of follow on activities, though my favourite would be a design your own elephant colouring session.
There’s nothing to fault this board book, and the fact that there are further Elmer stories to enjoy as they get older is just the icing on the cake. There’s nothing like finding a new favourite friend and sharing countless adventures with him. I’d like to thank the publishers for sending us this new version to review. It was perfect.
