Max had a wagon and he began putting his treasures into it. First, it was his bear, then the dog, who was asleep on the chair and looking decidedly disinterested in what was going on, but he played his part. Then it was Max's ball and the contents begin to seem just a little precarious and were even more so when Max's car was added to the pile, but bear sat astride Dog and Max pushed the wagon whilst holding the car on top of the ball with the other. Then he added his cookie and Dog began to look just the tiniest bit distracted and bear fell out. Dog got bear and brought him back and he did the same when the car and the ball fell off the wagon (in the literal sense of the phrase). Then the cookie fell out...
It's a board book and the perfect size for young hands. It will stand quite a lot of rough handling and it will be quite safe to leave it with a child for them to enjoy - unlike those bigger books with paper pages which have to kept on mummy's shelf and only come out when she has time to share the book with you. But this is an unusual board book. It has a real story, not pages of pesky numbers or pictures of boats and tractors (not that there's anything wrong with pictures of tractors but there comes a time when a boy likes to see his vehicles doing something). And it's a good story - I've read it three times now and I've laughed out loud each time, so it's a pleasure for toddlers and the adult who can get just the teeniest bit bored with some board books.
The text is simple and clear - I'd be delighted to share it with an emerging reader or a sufferer from dyslexia who needs just a little bit of assistance to get going with reading. The pages are off white with a matt finish and as it's a board book there's no shadow through from the other side and - best of all - the story is good enough for either group to feel that they've achieved something when they get through to the end. The pictures are delightful and give ample clues as to what is going on in the text and Eva Eriksson hasn't stinted on detail - look at the expressions on Max's face, or Dog's: even bear manages a look of shock when he falls.
There are three books in this lovely series and they're all to the same standard. The other two are Max's Bath and Max's Bear. I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy of the book to the Bookbag.
