|summary=Enjoyable alien invasion adventure which fans of TV's Falling Skies and V will enjoy. There's nothing deeper than good vs evil, but there are fantastic action scenes, shape-shifting baddies and plenty of green alien gunge. Plenty for the adrenalin junkies to enjoy then!

They are coming. If you are caught, you will not escape. If you escape, they will hunt you down. You must not be captured. Everything depends on you. Prepare for Earthfall.

Life is chugging along pretty much as normal for Sam Riley when his father suddenly turns grey with fear and rushes off to an emergency at work. Within 24 hours, alien spaceships have appeared above every major city across the world and enslaved the entire population with a mind probe. Except Sam. Sam has no idea why he is immune to the alien signal or how he recovered from a terrible injury after a fight with one of their drones. But after a year hiding in London's sewers, he has learned how to survive.

It's only when he's rescued by a gang of kids his own age, kids who are also unaffected by the mind probe, that Sam truly begins to understand what's going on and the scale of the challenge they face in defending the planet...

Earthfall is an enjoyable alien invasion adventure which fans of TV's Falling Skies and V will enjoy. If you're looking for something with a bit more depth than a superficial battle between good and evil or some unexpected plotting, then it probably isn't the book for you. But if you like a good chase and a kickass fight or two, then you'll love its fantastic action scenes. You'll also get shape-shifting aliens, robots that explode in a satisfying hail of green gunge and even a criminal secret society. There is most definitely plenty for the adrenalin junkie here and the book is a real page-turner. I read it one, rather manic, sitting and barely took a breath.

Sam is quite an interesting character - given an implant designed to protect against the alien invasion, it turns out he is the key to the defence of Earth. There are quite a few possibilities for him in potential future books and I can see a series about his fight against the Voidborn winning proving as popular as Walden's H.I.V.E..

If Earthfall appeals to you, you'll also enjoy Gone by Michael Grant, a cross between Heroes and a Stephen King novel. You could also look at The Enemy by Charlie Higson, in which young survivors battle zombies rather than aliens.
