In the fight of good versus evil many superheroes stand out. Batman. Spiderman. And now, straight from the aisles of the supermarket, we have Supertato. He's a cape wearing, belt toting spud. Variety unknown. What I do know is that he's a huge hit in my toddler's nursery class and he's back for another battle against his arch enemy the evil pea.
It's night time in the supermarket and the evil pea is up to no good. He's found the switch to the freezer and no one is going to stop him flicking it. That's bad news for the lollies and bad news for the whole store as Supertato's henchmen, the frozen peas, are released from their icy home. Can anyone save the day? Wait! It's Supertato to the rescue, backed up by his pals the super veggies!
This is a pacey romp of a book. The story rolls along at a cracking pace punctuated by visual and verbal jokes for the kids wrapped up in a witty pastiche of the genre that will amuse parents. The full page illustrations pack a punch. Every page is bursting with action, peril and drama. Even when it's over it's not over with eighteen cameos of the superhero to be inspected on the back pages. In these outtakes, Supertato can be spotted in his fluffy towel clutching his rubber ducky and hanging out with his pals Brocolli and Aubergine.
Sue Hendra has a real feel for creating characters that will engage the under fives and deftly creating scenarios that amuse them. Supertato is a spud you'll like. If your under five is like mine then they will love him. Fifteen of his nursery pals agree.
Supertato may well be in a league of his own but Sue Hendra has created some other cheeky characters. No-Bot, The Robot With No Bottom is almost as big a hit and Doug the Bug That Went BOING has had longevity in our house. For more Supertato fun be sure to read his first adventure too.
