Louis gets eaten by a Gulper, but it's okay as his sister Sarah has a plan! But what will she do when the Gulper gets eaten by a Grabular? And the Grabular by an Undersnatch? Surely this day can't get anymore ridiculous, or can it?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it made me laugh out loud on a number of occasions and I thought the ever increasingly mad monsters made this a gem of a story. Admittedly it is quite probably only suitable for a fairly narrow market (that being slightly older boys) as it could be seen as quite scary in places, even my husband thought it was a little strange! But if slightly strange is your kind of story, then you will love this.
The illustrations could be seen as a bit old fashioned when it comes to the style in which the children are illustrated, and the layout of the pages is not particularly imaginative – but the story more than makes up for this. The ever increasing monsters are wonderfully thought up and brilliantly drawn.
The other nice thing about this story is that it is so far fetched that it actually leaves you guessing until the last minute. Will Sarah manage to rescue her brother, or will the Gulper win in the end? I'm not going to tell you, you will just have to find out for yourself of course!
So if you enjoy a silly tale and aren't at all squeamish then this is the book for you, but do be aware that some children might find it all a bit too much and might not ride their bikes again for fear of Undersnatchers, Grabulars and Sabre Tooth Yumpers!
All in all, a story which is endlessly imaginative and frighteningly entertaining all in equal measure.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
If you liked this then I recommend you try The Emperor of Absurdia by Chris Riddell, or The Kiss That Missed by David Melling, which are both enchanting tall tales filled with extraordinary creatures.
