Still battling the zombie hordes who first appeared in Tell Me When I'm Dead, Dave Pulaski thinks his prayers have been answered when the Black Dragon Security team show up to rescue him and his wife Holly. But things only get worse – with the virus mutating, and the infected getting smarter. When Dave discovers the truth behind the contagion it will drive him past all limits of faith or reason – but will he able to manage dealing with this knowledge whilst protecting Holly and those closest to him?
Steven Ramirez is a former screenwriter, lives in Los Angeles, and enjoys Mike and Ikes with his Iced Caffe Americano, and doesn't sleep on planes.
In Tell Me When I'm Dead, the first part of this trilogy, readers were introduced to Dave, Holly and a Zombie plague – in a book which had a whole lot of world building to do, but did so with drive, excitement and a memorable lead character. With Dead is All You Get, it's clear that Ramirez knows his readers will already be familiar with the world he's created, so he's able to really put the pedal to the metal – increasing the scope, tension and drama of this story, and making for a read that is unputdownable.
Several gasp-out-loud moments of real, epic drama are balanced nicely with carefully constructed moments of human drama and interaction – and Ramirez has a real knack for creating relatable, three-dimensional characters whose stories he continues to build upon here. Dave in particular is built upon wonderfully from Tell Me When I'm Dead – his personal journey of growth and recovery serving as a fascinating counterpoint to the death and destruction that surrounds him, and I'm really eager to see how he'll develop into Book 3, as he's a rare kind of hero for these sorts of books.
As pulse racing and action packed as it is thoughtful and moving – Dead is All You Get is a superb sequel that builds on the work author Steven Ramirez began in Tell Me When I'm Dead – leaving me and I'm sure the majority of readers, hugely excited to see where things will go in Book 3.
For further reading, I'd recommend starting with Book One in this series – Tell Me When I'm Dead is a pulse-jumping start to the series that builds a dark future with admirable skill.
