Moose has joined the animal firefighters, and he's very excited. He's set for a day of daring rescues, blaring sirens, and haring around town at top speed. He and his friends are awfully brave, and it's a good thing too, as they're going to have a busy day.
A Day With The Animal Firefighters reminded me positively of Richard Scarry's books, with plenty of interesting animals getting stuck into their jobs. It's a style that gets such a warm reaction from young children, that you can't help but love it. Much like Richard Scarry, A Day With The Animal Firefighters appeals to stereotypical boys and girls alike. It's a gentle adventure, it's got rescue without too much testosterone, and it has broad and approachable characters.
However, there is A Little Problem. Sharon Rentta uses Emphasising Capital Letters. She uses them a lot. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that she uses them A Bit Too Much. A gentle sprinkling throughout would have been fine and suited the Tone Of The Book. However, here they are Every Other Sentence. They lose their impact and just seem wrong. That said, as A Day With The Animal Firefighters will be read to young children more than by young children, it's not The End Of The World. Beyond the capital letters, the writing is brilliant. The vocabulary, pacing and style are spot on. The pages flow by brilliantly, and it's bound to be a highly popular repeat read.
Sharon Rentta's illustrations suit the tone perfectly. All of the characters are highly appealing. It's great fun to see all the action on every page, and there are plenty of amusing asides hidden throughout. That poor koala gets a bum deal quite a lot, but he's certainly good comedy value! The young book fans will ask plenty of interesting questions throughout. It's one of those wonderful picture books that can take much longer to read, as you expand on what's going on throughout the book.
A Day With The Animal Firefighters is a lovely addition to any bookshelf. Highly recommended.
Fans of firemen will also love Chief Rhino To The Rescue by Sam Lloyd. What Do People Do All Day? by Richard Scarry is a great choice for all children. For another 'day our' try A Day at the Animal Post Office by Sharon Rentta
