The animals on the farm are in a playful mood and some of them are hiding. Duck knows that there's a dotty animal playing peek-a-moo behind the tractor, but who is it? Lift the flap and we can all see that it's laughing cow, with her head popping right out to greet us. Someone is playing the same game with ginger cat - and there's an awful lot of mud around. Who can it be? Well, when you move the mud out of the way (don't worry - it's a flap - rubber gloves are not required) we can see that it's piglet, who's having a wonderful time.
There are five animals who are playing hide and seek who emerge from under the flaps in 3-D glory. Even to an adult who knows what to expect, what is revealed from under the flaps is quite startling and any child in the two- to five-year-old target group is going to be delighted. The paper engineering is good and as robust as can be achieved in a book of this type. It might be wise to supervise children in the lower end of the age group who are still at the 'grab anything that looks interesting and try and put it in your mouth' stage, but older children will have a lot of fun working out how it's done!
The text is a bouncy rhyme, but I suspect that most attention is going to go to what is hidden under the flaps. The illustrations are simple and clear and the colours shout about warmth and enjoyment. There's plenty of scope for making all sorts of animal noises and encouraging children to do the same. It's perhaps not the best 'winding down before bedtime' book, but it is great good fun.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy of the book to the Bookbag.
For more springtime fun, this time in the form of a board book and suitable for the nought to three age group, try Egg: An Egg-Citing Easter Eggs-Capade! (My Little World) by Jonathan Litton and Fhiona Galloway. For more paper engineering The Very Hungry Caterpillar Pop-Up Book by Eric Carle takes a lot of beating.
