One day, a little girl decides to make her daddy a sandwich. It starts out well, with two slices of bread, but things soon slip and slide from there into culinary chaos as she searches through the house for all of his favourite things, like biscuits dunked in tea, and his favourite slippers, and even the remote control!
This is one of those fun reading aloud stories that has plenty to giggle over together. I linked the range of favourite things that the little girl goes through in order to make the sandwich. There's probably something for every child to identify with in relation to their dad. For my little boy it was seeing the addition of stinky cheese and some bubble bath! It is, of course, so ridiculous as to make things even funnier. How is she going to fit a deckchair into a sandwich? Or a banjo?! I personally liked the addition at the end of a large squirt of ketchup!
When the sandwich is almost complete there's the nice touch of having to turn the book on its side in order to see the picture of the towering sandwich. You can spend quite some time just looking at all the different items she's squashed in, and pondering how much trouble she's going to get into! Her final touch, however, is rather sweet. She says the sandwich needs the thing her daddy loves more than anything, and that's her! So at the very end of the book, there she is perched on top of the sandwich. I really like the dad's face on this page, as it's a mixture of both horror and the awareness of the need to be nice and grateful to the child! The illustrations are great throughout, very colourful and lively, and the story is full of fun.
As for our reading of the story, well my little boy got to the end and said 'but where's the normal sandwich?' Always a fan of food, I think the sight of this alarmingly tall, utterly uneatable sandwich was rather disturbing to him! He seems to have gotten over this initial reaction since he's asked for the story again several times since. He just says as we close the book, as if to comfort himself, 'he needs a small sandwich now...'
