Summary: A jolly and light-hearted read all about appreciating your mum. It's a bit of a one-joke book, but it does all click nicely. It's worth a look. | |

A young girl imagines how awful life would be if aliens got her marvellous mum. She pictures all manner of kooky space monsters tucking her up in bed, giving her green eggs for breakfast, and scaring all the other parents at school. She (and the readers too) realise just how lucky she is to have such a lovely mum. Aww, bless!
Don't Let Aliens Get My Marvellous Mum! could easily be a sickly book, but the aliens make it great fun. They're more silly than scary, so even the littlest book fans will chuckle along with the joke. Page by page features incongruous situation and gives children the opportunity to imagine what their life would be like with aliens taking care of them. It's very much a one-joke book, but it's all very jolly and makes for an enjoyable light read.
Liz Pichon's illustrations suit the light-hearted nature perfectly. The aliens are sufficiently weird, the humans very sweet. There's a cartoony simplicity to the pictures, but it all works really well. They're bright, bold and awash with colour. Children will really enjoy the pictures.
It's one of those books that, whilst you might not read it again and again and again, it's a fine addition to your bookshelves. It does everything it sets out to do and does it well. There's nothing really to rave about, but equally, there's nothing to knock. A nice one to add to the mix. Worth a look.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
Gillian Shields' earlier work DogFish is superb. You Are The First Kid On Mars by Patrick O'Brien is also an excellent choice for anyone interested in space. You might also enjoy I Love My Mum by Anna Walker.
