It's easy to think that growing your own fruit and vegetables is only possible if you live in the country and have a large garden, but Jojo Tulloh prove that you can live in a city, have an allotment – in her case a patch of East London waste ground – and put good food on the family's table. Even if you don't have the luxury of an allotment (and in some areas the waiting list is longer than most people can contemplate) there are still ways that almost everyone can produce some of their own food. You might wonder why this matters, but anything you grow yourself is going to be fresher when you eat it and taste far better than anything you pick up at the supermarket.
Jojo Tulloh is food editor of The Week. She has relevant experience but she's not a professional gardener or cook. Like the rest of us she's doing her best in a world that's occasionally strange an unpredictable and she' managed the allotment whilst heavily pregnant and with a young baby. The point is that this isn't a trial, but fun, relaxing and rewarding in equal measures. When you read her you feel that you could do it too.
If the gardening is inspirational then the food is mouth-watering. I grow quite a bit of our food in the back garden and my husband is well used to the questions which come round regularly as the seasons pass: what would you like with your courgettes/runner beans/tomatoes (delete as appropriate) tonight? Jojo has some seriously good recipes for the times when we get gluts (or when the food is likely to be cheapest in the shops). They're not fancy restaurant-type recipes which take an age to prepare, but the sort of food which is loved in busy homes.
Life on the soil and in the kitchen is arranged seasonally. Read it through when you get it and then refer back to it as the year progresses. You'll get ideas for what to grow and what to eat – and you don't have to live in a city to make the most of it.
