Summary: Eddie's having great fun camping and having a holiday which doesn't cost a small fortune. It's excellent - but you do risk having to go camping. Highly recommended - the book that is - I'm not too certain about camping! | |

Health Warning: If you buy this book, or even allow your child to get a sniff of it, you are going to end up going camping. OK? Read on, then...
Mum, Tom, Tilly, Lily and Eddie wanted to go on holiday and camping seemed like the ideal way to go. Lily and Tilly thought it was a brilliant idea and they had some experience, although their 'tent' did look just a little bit like a duvet over a chair. It's surprising what you need for a holiday, but Lily and Tilly had to be told to start again when Mum saw what they'd packed! But finally, Tom began to load the car and off they went.
I love this book. It's about real people. Mum drives the car. The kids are not all the same colour. Pretty obviously there's a bit of 'making do' going on - just like the rest of us have to. They have loads of fun doing the obvious things, like building a campfire to cook breakfast and making damper bread. (Don't worry - there's a recipe included and full instructions. You can just nod wisely when you read the book.) They make things from bits of driftwood and build sandcastles on the beach.
'Fun' includes eating fish and chips in the open air, doing some fishing from the quay, making friends and playing games, looking for the dog when he got lost, cooking the fish they caught and having chocolate bananas (you're OK - there's a recipe for them too...) cooked over the campfire. There's a little bit of excitement in the story, but it's more about getting fun out of doing something unusual that doesn't require that you spend a small fortune.
Confident readers will love the book, emerging readers will find that the pages are set out in a way which helps their reading, with a clear font in black (no fancy letters to confuse the unwary...) and the gorgeous pictures give plenty of hints if you're stuck for a word. There's plenty in the pictures to discuss and they're very easy on the eye.
There's loads of information at the back of the book too. I've mentioned the recipes, but you'll find information on the campfire, the cooking and the equipment you'll need as well as first aid, knots and a checklist helpfully supplied by Eddie.
OK, now where are you going to go?
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy of this book to the Bookbag.
For a slightly different approach to the subject we can recommend Wild Thing Goes Camping by Emma Barnes or Monstrous Maud: Horror Holiday by A B Saddlewick.
