Elvie wanted a puppy but she was still rather surprised when her mother agreed. Unfortunately what her mother brought home wasn't a puppy but a goldfish. Now it wasn't just a pet to cuddle and play with that Elvie had been after - she'd wanted to train the dog. Being a resourceful young lady she decided to train the goldfish instead. Sit was always going to be rather more than a challenge, but Elvie discovered that much could be achieved with Fluff's bubbles. Go on - you know exactly what I mean! Soon Fluff was doing mental arithmetic and finally singing. Before long he was in demand at pop concerts and for television appearances.
It's a delicious idea taken to a ridiculous extreme. It's also about farts. Admittedly they're goldfish farts, but farts are farts when you're learning to read and any mention of them means that you can giggle and nudge whoever it is that you're sat next to. So, it's got to be a winner. BUT you've got to add to that the fact that it's written by Michael Rosen. The language is simple, direct and tells this lovely, silly story in as few words as possible. Some of the vocabulary is gently challenging - which is as it should be - but there's nothing there that's going to deter even a reluctant reader. I doubt that even boys are going to be put off. Elvie might be a girl but her love of farts could make her an honorary boy.
Illustrations are by Tony Ross and there isn't a double page spread without at least one, and some pages have a couple of pictures. They're useful hints as to what the words might be saying and they break up the pages nicely. It's not going to be long before the emerging reader has the satisfaction of having a book under their belt.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy of the book to the Bookbag.
