Yay! More Infinity Drake! Boo! It's his final outing!
When Finn (real name Infinity) Drake took advantage of his grandma going off on a knitting cruise (yes, a knitting cruise, Grandma loves knitting) to spend a week away in the Pyrenees with his Uncle Al, he could never have predicted what would happen. The release of a devastating bio-weapon by supervillain Kaparis required Uncle Al and his super-secret invention to rush to an equally super-secret crisis meeting. An act of sabotage saw Finn shrunk to just 9mm in height and joining up with a crack special forces squad to save the world...
... but the world needs quite some saving when Kaparis is about.
We pick up the story with Finn and Carla finally reaching Kaparis's lair in the Carpathian mountains. There, they discover the evil one's end game - to cure his paralysis before rising again and pursuing world domination. To achieve this, he must use the BoldKlub code and shrink a team of medics down to Finn's microscopic size so that they can operate on his spine. Only our 9mm (about to become even smaller) has any chance of stopping him.
Oh, Infinity Drake. I'm going to miss you. This series has managed to match the frenetic pace and high octane action of any middle grade techno thriller. But it's also found room for a joke a paragraph and a stream of scientific information that excites, informs and entertains. It's been such a blast reading this series, it really has. Without spoiling anything, I'm hoping and praying that the end of Giant Killer leaves room for us all meeting Finn again some day in the future.
The science is interesting and accurate. The jokes are genuinely funny. And the action is utterly, utterly breathless. In this third book in the series, it's also nice to see both Finn and Carla maturing a little and struggling with their dual identities as special forces operatives and ordinary schoolkids. This was nicely handled. Plus, there's Grandma, who is hilarious and makes knitting cool again. Grandma is possibly my favourite secondary character in children's fiction in recent years.
What more can I say? Read Giant Killer. I defy you not to love it!
You should start with the first bookin the series and then the second. And you might also enjoy Blood Ties by Sophie McKenzie or Mutant City by Steve Feasey.
