Saying Yes is, according to Grumpy-Cat, highly overrated. That's why she's collected all her least favourite things and produced a book to teach those stupid humans her magic word – NO.
This is a very difficult book to review. It's essentially just a collection of photographs of Grumpy-Cat, often obviously digitally altered to add hats, clothes or settings on or around Grumpy-Cat. There are hardly any words other than a one word description of the photo and the word 'No'. For example, a photograph of Grumpy-Cat in the centre of an array of flowers with the words: 'Flowers' and 'No'. Occasionally there's a few extra words such as the page for 'Exercise' which includes an 'exception' – 'Running away from someone annoying.'
So who is this aimed at? Will it appeal? How do I rate it? These are all questions I asked myself and I'm not sure I can answer them adequately. It's aimed at cat-lovers and anyone who prefers seeing the world in a negative light. Or, maybe, it's simply aimed at fans of Grumpy-Cat. And there are, undoubtedly, many thousands / millions of fans around the world.
For those of you who may have missed out and are at this point wondering what on Earth I am talking about, a little explanation may be useful: Grumpy-Cat is a cat (her proper name is Tardar Sauce) who happens to have a naturally grumpy expression. From her first appearance on the social news site Reddit in 2012, she has gone on to become an internet session across all social media platforms and is even going to have her own animatronic waxwork at Madame Tussauds in San Francisco.
I very much enjoyed flicking through this book (I don't think 'read' is the right word to describe how you approach this book) and it did make me smile and laugh out loud a couple of times. I personally wouldn't spend £8.99 on the book but suspect that others may feel it would be money well spent. As a bonus there's a selection of stickers in the back to allow readers to join in and say 'No' to the world.
Overall, this is a silly and fun book with no pretentions to be anything more than that. If you accept this for what it is, it probably deserves the four star rating I've given it. However, I think it's crucial you know what you're buying. If you're expecting a book with any more substance and you're not happy to spent £9 on set of photographs, I'd suggest you stay away. However, if you're a fan of Grumpy-Cat you might want to say 'No' to the world but 'Yes' to this book.
