I have vivid memories from my youth of seeing the Hollywood beauties on the television or at the cinema and wishing that I could look like that and - of course, no matter how I tried, I never could. The look of Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Ava Gardner and Sofia Loren always eluded me. To begin with, I lacked knowledge. Despite being reasonably petite my oblong face was never going to look anything like Audrey Hepburn's. I lacked quite a few of Brigitte Bardot's attributes too. Gradually, I realised that developing my own style was the best way to go, but I'll confess that there are still elements of the stars' looks which I'd love to copy. That's where Vintage Secrets: Hollywood Beauty comes in.
There's quite a bit of background before you start the artistic side. You're encouraged to take a good look at your face and decide on its shape because that's going to affect what you can do successfully. There are also some good tips as to how to wear your hair most flatteringly. (I knew there was a reason why I wear a fringe.) Each shape is referred back to a Hollywood beauty and there's frequently an example of a current actress for those not familiar with the stars of the twenties through to the sixties.
There are clear instructions for making the 'face', lips, eye makeup, hands, body makeup and getting the overall look. There are lots of tips too which are going to come in handy no matter what you're trying to achieve. So far as the look's concerned, you're told how the stars did it (and some of it sounded quite tedious) but there are lots of modern equivalents which achieve the same results with much less effort.
It doesn't stop at makeup, though. There's a lot of detail about hairstyles and how to achieve the looks and general advice about clothes. It's a fun, interesting and informative book to read and I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
I bet you're wanting a new wardrobe now, aren't you? You could shelve Hollywood Beauty next to How to Get a Celeb's Body: Discover the Secrets of the Stars with Your Own Personal Trainer by Elise Lindsay.
