There's a little monster called Small and a big monster called Big. Small is fast asleep in bed one night when Big comes in, ruffles his hair and starts talking to him. As he speaks it becomes apparent how much he loves the little monster and how much he wants to protect him. He explains that the days are always so busy and there is never enough time to say all of the things that he should say, but it is easy to do so when it is dark.
The words that Big goes on to utter are truly beautiful and full of such lovely sentiments that I felt my heart swell as I was reading the story with my daughter. Here is just one example:
You live as though life's one huge present
Unwrapping a bit every day
That's just how we all should be living, my love
And look at you showing the way!
He goes on to tell the little monster that even when he is cross with Small, it is only because he loves him. He also says that he wants nothing to hurt him but if things do hurt, one can learn from them and become stronger. All of these words utter completely how I feel about my own children and what I would want to say to them. I feel that probably the most important words come towards the end when he says:
Believe in yourself and believe in your dreams
And you'll be what you dream you can be.
These strong words of encouragement are surely the ones that all children need to hear.
As you can see, this book is really very special. The feelings and sentiments are exquisite with the relationship between the two characters being so warm and caring. Added to this, there are some wonderful and amusing illustrations that really add to the overall story telling. The story is also written wholly in rhyme which helps to provide a gentle rhythm that is just perfect for bedtime.
Everything about this picture book is just about perfect. It has already become one of my younger daughter's favourite books and she thinks it is very special. Also, as a parent, it reminds me how important it is to share my very special feelings with my children too. Once you have read this lovely book, there will surely be a warm smile on your face.
