Katie McGinty wants a pet. Really, really, REALLY wants a pet. Daddy says no, not yet, not until she's bigger. So she waits. And she waits. And then the time comes. Off to the pet shop they go, but it's possible Katie and Daddy have different ideas about what sort of pet would be appropriate. Katie has grand ideas for her first animal, and there's a rather large clue on the cover of the book.
This book isn't the first to tackle the age old problem of kids wanting pets and their parents being a tad more reluctant, but it's one of the funnier takes on the subject I've read. This is the story of wanting the pet and imagining life with it more than getting the pet itself.
It's everything a picture book should be: lively, colourful, funny, imaginative, and leaving you with lots to talk about. Why are some animals better suited to being a pet than others? What would your dream animal be? How much do you know about where it comes from and what it eats and how it lives?
Katie is a feisty character and I really loved that. She doesn't stick to the normal ideas, go with the crowd or care too much what people think. Even as she imagines life with her new pet, they're in the swimming pool together having fun, not giving two hoots that other people there are pointing and staring.
This book has brilliant illustrations, with little hints of comic genius, like the knickers on the washing line, or the stack of themed books Katie is reading. The colours pop and really sell the story, and by the end of it I had a craving for spaghetti, and a sudden need to visit Africa again. It was a pleasure to read.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending us a copy. It was delightful.
Also in this vein: The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr and a not too dissimilar Jacob O'Reilly Wants A Pet by Lynne Rickards and Lee Wildish plus let's not overlook the wonderful The Way To The Zoo by John Burningham
