Mick Inkpen has an enormous amount of talent, and he manages to somehow make the simplest of stories endearing and interesting. Here, on his 25th anniversary, Kipper is back with a new story in which he’s thinking about baby animals. He finds out what various different animal babies are called, and then he begins to wonder what he was when he was a baby.
It’s a little disturbing that Kipper is 25 years old. It makes me feel old! Yet it’s wonderful that this sweet little dog has stood the test of time and is as popular as ever. Kipper has, of course, moved with the times. In this story, when he’s unsure about what a baby owl is called he looks it up on his computer (which looks remarkably like an i-pad, only the image on the screen is a pear…) I have to say, I personally learned that baby frogs are called ‘froglets’ (never really thought about it before!) and I don’t think I knew a baby hedgehog was a hoglet either!
Kipper and Arnold take a trip to the park to see some of these baby animals, and their accidental discovery of a baby frog leads to my favourite pictures in the book. That little froglet is very, very cute! Anyway, cute frogs aside, the story continues as Kipper and Arnold reinforce all their new knowledge by drawing pictures of all the baby animals and writing their names underneath. It’s such a simple trick of repetition, but it works so well and is fun when reading with little ones who can point at the pictures along with you and try to remember that a baby duck is not a ducklet!
The ending is sweet, with Kipper wondering about himself as a baby. We are treated to an illustration of baby Kipper sitting with Big Owl, who is very, very big next to little puppy Kipper! It’s a lovely story throughout, and although very gentle there is some action in there too (poor Arnold drops his baby owlet toy into the pond in the park!) The story is easy to follow, and it’s a pleasure to read aloud and delight in all the beautiful pictures.
It works well for winding down for bedtime, is nice to share with small toddlers and bigger fans of Kipper too. A lovely anniversary story.
