Kitty Kool has a new beauty school, and she's very excited about her opening day. However, when her makeovers for a grumpy crocodile, messy rabbit and spider don't go quite as they expected she worries that perhaps her beauty school isn't as fabulous as she'd first thought!
I was a little concerned when I first saw this book that it was going to be terribly girly and all about pretty hair-styles and sparkly jewellery. However, Kitty Kool is actually quite funny. When a cranky crocodile comes in needing a snappy new outfit Kitty sets to work. The results are very toddler-like since he comes out covered in stars and stripes and a shiny shirt and sparkly sequins! It's too late for him to change, so off he stomps.
Second in to the shop is a bunny having a bad hair day. Once again Kitty goes a little OTT and puts every clip and bangle and grip and ribbon into the rabbit's fur. This page really made me smile since my daughter frequently goes through her 'hair pot' and puts in as many hair clips and bands as she can lay her hands on!
Poor old spider is next and she is looking for extra-special shoes. Kitty, overwhelmed by the options, gives her one of every kind leaving poor spider wearing boots and trainers and heels and flippers and ballet shoes...All of Kitty's customers leave in a huff and Kitty is left wondering if her school isn't a good idea. However, once at the Carnival it turns out that her three customers win prizes for the most special outfits, thus gaining Kitty the reputation of a stylist who makes everyone look stylish and different and cool!
The illustrations are colourful throughout with lots to look at and some sweet little mice doing different things on every page. The text is easy to follow, there are a few rhyming parts thrown in to spice it up and the only thing I really didn't like was poor Kitty's name since the 'Kool' spelt with a K makes me cringe! I liked the idea behind the story, however, that it's okay to be different. And although it isn't a particularly amazing book it's certainly fun to read, and it stands up to repeated reads which is always important with little ones who want stories again and again!
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
