The second instalment of Blake’s Time Hunters series sees our heroes Tom and Isis transported to medieval times in the hope of retrieving a second lost amulet, which is hidden in a golden sword. Knight Quest is an action packed story with plenty of thrills and action, but is crammed with enough historical facts to keep fussy parents happy.
In my review for the previous book, I mentioned the fact that I was not a fan of the convoluted prologue involving an undead Egyptian princess, which serves as a rather clumsy set up for the main story. The concept has more holes than a sieve. For example, why does the god Anubis seems intent on killing Isis when she is already dead? True, it makes the story more exciting, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense when you think about it too deeply!
The main story is about a lowly pig boy called Alymere who dreams of becoming a knight. The main characters are well drawn and likeable and I loved the villainous Percival, who is determined to thwart Alymere’s plans. The heroes embark on a quest to retrieve a sword hidden in a cave, but must also display knightly virtue in order to rise above the competition.
The book also has a section containing interesting facts about Medieval England as well as four more collector cards which can be used to play a top-trumps game.
I also had the opportunity to read books 3 and 4 in the series. In book 3, Tom takes Isis to the cinema, which proves to be an unforgettable experience, especially when Anubis appears and whisks them away to Viking times, where they have to retrieve the amulet from a corpse floating in a boat as part of a Viking funeral. In book 4, Tom introduces Isis to the wonders of the supermarket, before being transported to Ancient Greece and pitched into the thick of the events depicted in Homer’s Iliad. The character development in the books is excellent and we really start to care about Tom and Isis.
I enjoyed all three books, which will no doubt prove to be a big hit with the target audience of children aged 7 and over. The stories succeed in bringing history to life and make it exciting. Blake’s excellent descriptive narrative brings the sounds, smells and sights of these ancient worlds to life and engages the reader, transporting them back in time alongside Tom and Isis. I look forward to reading the two final books in the series to see whether Isis eventually makes it to the afterlife.
Although these books can be read as standalone titles, it is probably best to read the first book, Time Hunters: Gladiator Clash by Chris Blake in order to understand the complete backstory.
