Streaker the famed 100-mile-an-hour dog is lost. It all started with her wanting to protect some pies from the pie snatcher, and her valiant efforts to hide them safely in her own tummy! Now she's miles away from home and her pups, in a strange van, the pies out of the hiding place but not really looking the better from that, and the home and two-legged Trevor nowhere in sight.
Lost! is an early reader and as such it should work well. It truly is very funny, in this silly, yucky way associated with small children and animals, but done in a rather endearing and intelligent way. It's a kind of humour that tends to appeal a lot to children, especially boys, though my 6 year old fairy-loving girl liked it too.
I was not familiar with Streaker's antics until this book, but apparently it's the first one where Streaker tells her story in her own words. It works a treat with a great humorous effect. I was laughing out loud, mostly because Streaker's reasoning reminded me a lot of the way small children reason as well - I suppose it's an added bonus for any parent reading this, though the main point of the book is to encourage and develop independent reading skills, so it will be mostly read by children themsleves.
If you have a child that's likely to get interested in that kind of story, Lost! should really get them going, as it combines a plot full of adventure, funny funnies and good supporting illustrations. The vocabulary is reasonably easy to cope with for children that age, the jokes easy to get and the result is chaotic, hysterical mayhem, and hopefully a 6 to 9 year old with the satisfaction of reading a proper book (and enjoying it) under their belt.
Thanks to the publisher for sending the BookBag this volume.
