In the previous book in the series, Lulu was trying on a variety of shoes. Here, she turns her attention to clothes - presumably taking the shoes off first! She wears a stripy top, armbands to go swimming, an apron to do the washing up, a cycle helmet, a party dress, and finally her furry dressing gown. Each involves a different textured material, bow to tie, or zip to do up.
Every young child will be hooked from the zip on the first page. That sort of interaction with the book is always lots of fun. The squishy armbands are lovely - a form of stress ball for the under 5s! It's not just a fabric sampler though; Camilla Reid has written a brilliantly simple and engaging tale of Lulu going about her day. The little touches like warning Lulu not to go too fast on her bike give it an extra level beyond what the youngest book fans usually get.
Ailie Busby's illustrations add to the charm. They have a similar (but original) sketch-like style to the Charlie and Lola books. All the pages are awash with freshness and vibrancy; Lulu's having a very fun day, and we're glad to be along for the ride.
The young 'uns will love poring over Lulu's Clothes for hours. Zip, unzip, zip, unzip, zip, unzip. Who can blame them? Recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
What's in the Fridge? by Gaby Goldsack and Jo Moon is another gloriously interactive book that every young child loves (even though parents hate all the bits in it!). Pop-up books are the bread and butter of interactive children's books, but Zoom and Fly, Mr Croc by Jo Lodge is a cut above most pop-up books. If we're mentioning pop-up books, we can't forget the wonderful Chick by Ed Vere.
