It's coming up to that time of year again – you know it's the one where you make resolutions about going on a diet, getting more exercise, stopping smoking or losing weight. If they last a week into the New Year you're probably doing well – and then you're left with a feeling of failure. Donna Blinston offers advice on how to make your resolutions and how to keep them – and I needed this advice as much as the next couch potato.
Donna's advice is based on Neuro Linguistic Programming, but don't let words like this put you off a new introduction to making resolutions – or setting goals at any time of year. There's a brief approach to NLP but this book is for the benefit of those people who want to consider how to set goals rather than those who wish to take on all the techniques. This slim book is actually an extract from another book – Psychobabble which the author has written and this fact is stated on the back of the book.
Much of the book is common sense, but common sense which is so often overlooked. We've all promised to go to the gym, to lose weight and to drink/smoke less but we forget to be specific with ourselves about exactly how we're going to achieve this or even to what end. Blinston guides us through the making of resolutions and fine tuning them so that we get exactly what we want and acquire the techniques to bring about the result.
That all sounds so good that you're probably wondering why the star rating is so low. I'm afraid that the answer to that is simple. Much of the book is just about unreadable because it doesn't seem to have had even basic proof reading. Occasionally it's so bad that it's necessary to imagine what you would hear if the words were read aloud and then to try and make sense of them within the context in which they appear. Words are spelled wrongly, misused and there's no consistency between American and English spellings. Sentences lack structure and extracting the meaning is akin to solving a complex puzzle and then trying to understand what is being said. Given that this is an extract from a book which purports to be written in plain English this is simply not good enough.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
