Mimi and Moochie are going shopping. They buy some gorgeous shoes and beautiful party dresses, then have an ice cream. Well, wouldn't you? When they meet other cats who are in need, Mimi and Moochie discover the joy of sharing with others.
In Please Don't Torment Tootsie, Margaret Chamberlain looked at how people should be kind to cats. I enjoyed her vibrant illustrations - as I do here - but felt the lack of central narrative held it back a little. Whilst there are families who will appreciate the message in Tootsie, Mimi and Moochie will be the better choice for most children. It's an enjoyable tale that can and will be re-read. Sure, there's a message in there too, but it's part of the whole.
The repetition of Do they buy them? They do. Wouldn't you? gives the tale a nice structure - and of course a pay-off at the end. The rhymes flow beautifully throughout. I did pause slightly at one rhyme that ended with A horrible muddiness splashed over us - it felt like it could have been phrased a bit better, but I think that's a horrible fussiness washing over a book reviewer, rather than anything the average reader will mind.
Mimi and Moochie are charming characters, and Margaret Chamberlain's illustrations give a wonderful feeling that you're along for a jolly day of shopping with two chums. If you like cats, ice cream, shopping and being nice to others, then Mimi and Moochie Go Shopping will be a fine addition to your bookshelf. Recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
Slightly younger readers will like the even simpler tale of shopping in A Present From Lulu by Caroline Uff. Ginger by Charlotte Voake is a more realistic catty tale. And we can't mention cats without mentioning the wonderful Mog the Forgetful Cat by Judith Kerr.
