Two collected stories from Mudpuddle Farm series – Nowt to Worry About and Tickety-Boo. How will the animals react when the sky goes strange and horrifying noises abound? Changes are afoot that could mark the end of Mudpuddle farm; or is it just a new beginning?
I've said in previous reviews for the Mudpuddle Farm series that there seems to be a wee bit of confusion on the part of the author in terms of continuity and this continues here. I suspect that the editors and publishers are more to blame for not putting things into a strict order. In this volume we see the return of Egberta rather than the Egbert we've seen in other volumes.
The first story in this book, Nowt to Worry About, has a wonderful ominous slow build up and a really apocalyptic tone. Unfortunately I feel that the build-up just goes on far too long and the potential terror of the pay-off at the end of it isn't quite as scary as it should have been (even bearing in mind the intended age of the reader). Once again the story ends with life-changing events which are not referenced again. It is good to see that the genius goose doesn't save the day again but at the same time I felt she was a little out of character.
The second story, Tickety-Boo, is another departure from the established norms. Once more the author tackles fairly adult themes from a child's point of view and once again we see some major changes to the farm we know. I didn't like this story as much as the other volumes I've read in the series as I found it somewhat lacking in actual plot.
