You are a lass of twenty-eight. Plucky, penniless and in Regency-era London the race is on to find a suitable suitor - or else doom yourself to life as an eternal spinster. Along your journey, you'll be accompanied by Lady Evangeline Youngblood - a fiesty noble eager to save you from a life alone, and fired by a rogueish sense for adventure. When it comes to suitors though, you'll have to make the ultimate decision between witty, pretty and wealthy Sir Benedict Granville, wholesome, rugged and caring Captain Angus MacTaggart, or the mad, bad and terrifyingly sexy Lord Garraway Craven. With orphans, werewolves, long lost lovers and ancient Egyptian artefacts along the way, it's clear this isn't going to be an easy decision...
I'm a big fan of the Choose Your Own Adventure books - they were huge in the '80s and early '90s, and as a result, my childhood bookshelves were packed full of them. They offered escapism that went beyond other books - allowing the reader to play a part in the characters' actions, and immersing them into worlds they'd perhaps always wanted to be in - one featuring Robin Hood was a particular childhood favourite of mine. Here the brilliant team of Kitty Curran and Larissa Zagiers take the Choose Your Own Adventure concept and adjust it for adults - sending the reader deep into the world of Regency England, and exchanging the normal child-friendly plots of the Choose Your Own Adventure series for scenes of a far more adult nature!
This is no mere spoof of Regency novels though - the creative team have clearly done their research, and affectionately parody a range of 'romance' novels and stereotypes - from Austen's Mr Darcy, and Bronte's Heathcliff through to the more recent Jamie Fraser of the Outlander series. The character voices are distinct and clever, with the sex scenes filthily funny - imagine the sex from Fifty Shades of Grey but written with ten times the intelligence and a knowing sense of humour.
Brilliantly witty and hugely readable, My Lady's Choosing is a riotous romp of an adventure, with saucy humour cleverly balanced by affectionate and well-researched parodies of beloved characters. Highly recommended by me, and my thanks to the publishers for the copy. For further reading I recommend Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon - a saucy highland adventure but one with some depth at the heart of it and beautifully described locations. We have reviewed Confessions of a Duchess by Nicola Cornick but we feel that My Lady's Choosing is the better book.
