Summary: An enjoyable romp as a young kid turns into a superhero when his bedtime story gets interrupted. It's all very energetic and action-packed - too much for bedtime reading, but worth a look during the day. | |

Nat's mum is reading him a bedtime story, but other things keep interrupting them. When she leaves to deal with them, Nat sneezes and turns into Nat Fantastic, superhero. He's got shiny silver pyjamas too, dontchaknow. Will he save the day? Course he will! Will his mum get to the end of the book? Well, that's a different matter altogether.
I really enjoyed Nat Fantastic. It's bustling with life and quirkiness. Children as superheroes is always a fun storyline, regardless of whether the readers look up to them or imagine themselves as superheroes. Nat Fantastic presses all the right buttons, with goodies and baddies, action and adventure, bravery and appreciation. It's all writ large, and although there's slightly more text than most picture books, even the youngest of book fans will happily come along for the ride.
Katherine McEwen's illustrations are excellent. At first glance, they might just have a simple cartoon style, but every page is packed with plenty of detail. There's a lot going on in terms of plot and in the background. Whether you just take it on board as the representation of excitement, or pore over all the details, it suits the story perfectly, and there's plenty to enjoy.
Nat Fantastic is a great slice of light-hearted fun. It won't necessarily be an all-time favourite, but it does everything right. Despite the bedroom setting, it's probably too energetic for bedtime reading, but it's still heartily recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
For a gentler bedtime tale, One More Hug For Nutmeg by Caroline Jayne Church is very sweet. Aliens In Underpants Save The World by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort is another light-hearted romp - it won't set the world on fire, but it's still silly and enjoyable.
