Matthew and Katy were together as teenagers but now years later both are with other significant others, and both Katy and Matthew’s wife, Alison are pregnant. Oh, and they’re in the same antenatal class. And, oh yes, Katy’s not 100% sure who the father of her baby is, current boyfriend Ben or, you’ve guessed it, long lost flame Matthew. Cue a comedy of errors, misunderstandings, fisticuffs and emotional outbursts, not all triggered by swarming hormones.
There are some great characters in this book, and to give her her due, Alison is one of them. She may not be everyone’s cup of tea but she’s a highly realistic portrayal of a mum to be who is a little OTT. Ben is a bit of a twat. But he’s also the kind of person Katy could say see you next Tuesday to (boom boom). Matthew, I’m not as sure about, because he waxed and waned in and out of responsible and wuss, but Daniel more than made up for this and brought some much needed gay best friend hilarity to the story. They all worked well together. You could imagine that they would at least be acquaintances if not BFFs.
This is a book that really kept my attention and I looked forward eagerly to times in the day when I knew I’d be able to steal a few moments with it. It’s a bit of an awkward one to carry round with you, especially on a Tuesday, as the cover screams SEX in big, pink letters, and colleagues and traveling companions of course invariably ask the question Do they really not? in response to catching sight of the title (full disclosure: some of us do).
It’s a book that shouldn’t be as good as it is, because when you try to describe it, it comes across as standard, run of the mill chicklit, and yet it’s so much more than that, so much funnier, so much better written. I enjoyed every page, found it really easy to get into initially, and felt satisfied by the ending. It has a chattier style than I expected, verging on full on informality, but it wasn’t cringe worthy or too familiar the way some books can be, and you got the impression there was an intelligent head behind the pen.
Highly recommended, I’d love to read the author’s other works and must thank the publishers for sending us this one to review.
