Spoilers for book one below.
Hattie Moore is determined that this year she’ll find true love - could it be with Goose, the boy next door who she's starting to think of as more than just a geek, or will he only ever see her as a friend? If she finds another boy, will he get jealous? And now she's found her real dad, will she get to know him properly?
I really liked Rae Earl’s first book in the Hattie Moore series until about two thirds of the way through, when I felt it tailed off into something a bit too predictable and lost a lot of the humour I’d loved. I’m pleased to say that this is far more consistent, being funny from start to finish, while it retains all of the strong points from the first book. Notably, Hattie has a brilliant voice, while the supporting cast is also very well-written and funny – especially love interest Goose and Hattie’s Gran, possibly my favourite character! I loved that Hattie's gran met Hattie's nemesis at school, the ultra-strict Mrs Matfield - they're a fabulous combination. Also, there's a decent amount of character development for Miss Gorgeous Knickers, Hattie's other nemesis from the first book, which is welcome as I thought she was a bit stereotypical in that one.
I smiled throughout the book and laughed out loud at numerous points. The diary format works well, making it easy to pick up for a few pages (if rather harder to put down!), and I love the little doodles scattered around the book which really add to its charming style. Earl's writing style is easy to read and her dialogue is particularly good, she really captures her characters well.
This series is an enjoyable one and I'd like to read more about Hattie Moore in the future. It's a perfect book to pick up when you want a light, refreshing read.
The ultimate books of this type, for me, are still Have a Little Faith and Keep The Faith by Candy Harper.
