Postman Pat has a special delivery to make. He has a box of helium balloons which he has to deliver to Pencaster Town Hall, but on the way there he stops off at Ted Glenn's garage and inquisitive Ted manages to release the balloons and they float away. As if that wasn't bad enough it's not long before PC Selby, with the balloons attached to his jacket, is floating off towards the harbour.
Have you ever found yourself just a little bit bored by Postman Pat? Have you found the words of the song going round in your head, which a few alterations which aptly described what you thought of his cat? Have you put a smile on your face, read it one more time and hoped that the phase would soon pass?
Me too.
Well, you're going to be pleasantly surprised by the Postman Pat Special Delivery Service with new characters and some new vehicles. It's a book which is primarily aimed at the three plus age group but it has staying power and I can see it being used as an early reader a couple of years later. There's a vocabulary which is challenging but the pictures give ample clues to help.
Taken at its simplest the story will delight any three year old as the balloons cause mayhem in the town, but there's plenty to discuss for the older child. Why do helium balloons float away when other balloons don't? How can the balloons manage to lift PC Selby? How did Pat manage to use the wind from the helicopter's rotor blades to push PC Selby towards the boat? There's education in there but it's delivered with a very light touch.
It's a good book for a journey or as a bedtime story with lots to discover in the pictures each time you look – and you don't even have time to get annoyed with the cat.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
