When Zoe Harper arrives at Somerby, a lovely old mansion and the setting for the latest televised cookery contest, she is full of excitement. Before long, she finds herself rescuing one of the judges, Gideon Irving, from a ditch and realises that she is extremely attracted to him. Not long after, she meets her room mate and fellow competitor, Cher, for whom there is no immediate attraction as she comes across as shallow and devious. All the rest of the contestants are friendly though and they are soon all immersing themselves in the challenges of the various rounds.
As the competition progresses, Zoe becomes more involved with the couple who run Somerby and thinks nothing of helping out when things become difficult for them, never even thinking that she might be ruining her chances in the competition. Of course, there's at least one person who's willing to take advantage of her good nature and that same person is keeping an eye on what is going on between Zoe and Gideon. Will Zoe be able to keep her attraction for him a secret until the competition and does she stand a chance of winning anyway?
I absolutely loved 'Recipe for Love' from the moment I picked it up. I always enjoy Katie Fforde's books and always know what to expect – an absorbing story, loveable characters and at least a little love intrigue. Zoe is a great main character and someone who I could really imagine getting on with. I could also fully understand her attraction to Gideon who seems to have all the looks and a great personality. The storyline had me hooked from the start and all of the different strands interweave well.
I loved the fact that the story was based on a cookery competition and I couldn’t wait to find out what all of the tasks were going to be. There were some great ones too such as having to cater for a wedding; cooking dishes from foraged ingredients; and creating a three course meal from the best local ingredients. The contestants were a real mixed bunch as well and provided many humorous moments throughout. This book is a definitely a must for all fans of TV cookery programmes especially ones with a bit of drama.
I love Katie Fforde's writing style which is so easy and relaxed that you don't want to put the book down. I thoroughly enjoyed every page but I do have one complaint. It's too short! I just wanted to carrying on reading more and more.
If you think you will enjoy this book, why not take a look at some of her other books - Love Letters or A Perfect Proposal.
