There can't be many children who don't get nits at some point at school. This is a brilliant story to share with them if they're feeling a bit sensitive about it since the nits originate with the teacher! We meet the little louse who starts the trouble in the first place, and then watch as the lice babies jump around from child to child. Will everyone manage to get rid of the lice once and for all?
We really enjoyed this story in our house. It's full of fun, and brings a common school problem out in the open without any awkwardness and instead makes it very funny. I really loved that the louse walks into the classroom looking for a head to land on and that it's the teacher's head she ends up choosing! From there, of course, the hatched baby lice start jumping onto all the children's heads as the teacher scritch scratches until there is so much scritching and scratching that a letter has to be sent home asking parents to rid their children of the lice! All the children are combed and cleaned, but the poor teacher lives alone and has no one to help her comb through her hair, so of course she infects them all over again with lice! The next time the headmaster helps out the teacher, and not only does he get rid of the lice, he also falls in love with her!
So, the story is sweet and funny, and the illustrations definitely contribute to making this a wonderful book. All the different characters are well portrayed and the large-headed characters are charming. I love the illustration of what's going on in the classroom with one child drawing on another, and one child cutting another's fringe! The colourful pictures are really varied, looking at the situation from different angles and in such a lively style. There's lots to see on each page, and even the louse manages to look a little bit cute!
This is perfect for those in the early years of school, for anyone feeling a bit sensitive about having nits (including teachers!) and is also just a fun story for anyone to enjoy. Definitely recommended!
