Sir Charlie Stinky Socks is a wonderful young man. Not only has he been involved in another splendid adventure, he also wants to donate 10% of the royalties from this book to Naomi House Children's Hospice. It all began like this…
Right at the top of the tall tower with the pointy roof…
…a witch with a watch was dreaming a scheme, a long green dragon was lost in sleep and a little Princess was snoring!
Despite the thunder and lightening, the witch and the dragon slept but the Princess screamed:
Someone has stolen my teddy!
Fortunately Sir Charlie Stinky Socks, his fearless cat, Envelope and his grey mare were on hand – and there's nothing that Sir Charlie likes more than the prospect of a damsel in distress. A quick polish of his sword and into the creepy corridor he crept.
Now in the search for the Princess's Teddy Bear our hero is going to encounter some serious smells from a pungent potion made by the Ghastly Ghouls and a headless ghost who needs to be reunited with his head. Hidden trapdoors drop horse and fearless rider though the floor and down slippery slopes to be met by the Cellar Dweller, who isn't half as fearless as he looks.
You'll find pages which fold out, fold up and fold down as you follow Sir Charlie in his search for the missing Teddy Bear. It's a rip-roaring ride that any child is going to love. There are disgusting smells, lots of things to be frightened of and along the way a real sense that Sir Charlie might not succeed this time. This is edge of the seat stuff!
The text is a delight to read – and particularly to read aloud. You can't help but get caught up in the alliteration, the rhymes and the sheer excitement of it all. Some of the words used are going to be a challenge but then that's A Good Thing which Sir Charlie would fully support. The illustrations are the icing on the cake – dynamic, ingenious and with something to fire the imagination on every page.
And the cherry on top of the cake? Well, that's got to be Sir Charlie Stinky Socks himself. He's gorgeous and I could eat him with a spoon. Highly recommended as a book that will be read again and again.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
The last book to catch my imagination like this was Oliver Who Would Not Sleep by Mara Bergman and Nick Maland – I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.
