Sid the cat has six owners in six different houses, and he munches his way through six dinners a day. This big ol' greedyguts has a great life, but then one day his owners all decide they want to go on holiday. They consider putting him in a cattery, but they have strange rules like one meal per cat, not six. They give it some thought, and eventually decide to all go on holiday together, taking Sid with them.
A Highland Adventure is a sequel to Inga Moore's original tale of Six Dinner Sid. He's a charming character - a bit of a rogue, but lovely with it. It's a nice touch to take him from suburbia to the wilds of Scotland, and see him make friends with a wildcat. Sid does what cats do - explore, hunt, eat - and it's fun to see him padding around. Although there's plenty of action, it's all told with a leisurely pace. It's a sweet and gentle story, albeit a little outlandish in places. Cat fans, in particular, will enjoy it lots.
Inga Moore's illustrations have a traditional style to them. I much prefer her drawings of Sid and Jock the wildcat to Sid's owners. The people don't quite have the same life to them that the animals have. Sid is the clear star of the show, and it's good fun to see him getting up to all sorts of shenanigans in Scotland, but I wasn't as blown away by the illustrations as I'd have liked.
Six Dinner Sid is slightly longer than the average picture book, making it ideal for children on the cusp of reading themselves. The vocabulary is clear but engaging, and the pacing is gentle without being boring. It's all jolly and pleasant, and if your young 'uns are devouring all things feline, then they'll love it. Worth a look.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
The Church Mouse by Graham Oakley also has a traditional style and gentle pace to it, this time with a mouse as the star, but there is a friendly cat too. I Don't Want A Cool Cat by Emma Dodd is good fun too.
