If your friend told you that she'd fallen for a gorgeous man – they were deeply in love and getting married as soon as possible – the probability is that you'd be delighted for her. On the other hand if she said that she'd met a man whom she thought was the best she was likely to meet and on the basis that he was wealthy she was planning to marry him, what would you think? Does the word gold-digger spring to mind? Are you horrified? Well, think again as it just might be that the second solution could be the one that leaves your friend in the best position.
There's strong evidence to suggest that marriages based on love don't stand the test of time. 'Love' as an emotion fades quite quickly and given that men seem to have a preference for attractive wives the middle-aged woman whose bloom of youth is fading regularly finds herself traded in for a younger model. Unless the husband is rich she'll find herself with little in the way of assets and income and if she's been a stay-at-home mother to the children she could well find getting back into the job market difficult.
The same trade-in could well happen if she married a man for his money but she's likely to come out of the union with more in the way of assets and income and if she's chosen wisely she might not even need to think about employment. Does that sound cold and calculating? You bet it does – and that's what the authors of this book would like women to be. Stop letting your heart rule your brain and look to ensuring your financial future.
It's very easy reading and makes a thought-provoking if not compelling case for marrying for money rather than love. I thought that it fell down on something quite basic – marriage is hard enough when there is love there and I would have thought that without love it could be well-nigh intolerable. It would not matter to me how much money a man had – I would find it impossible to live in intimacy with him if there was no love. But – it might be that I'm old-fashioned and that, as the authors say, love can grow when people are thrown together.
It's cynical. It's down-to-earth and in places it's laugh-out-loud funny. I loved reading it. If my daughter told me that she was taking it to heart I would be horrified. I'd still like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
