The morning was grey,
it was gloomy and dark,
when George and his mum
got dressed for the park.

When George looked out the window at the rain, he was a bit reluctant to go out. That was until his mum told him that they would be taking lots of extra cuddles that would keep him lovely and warm. In fact, he would be as snug as a bug rolled up in a rug. Added to that he would be like two cosy bats in thick woolly hats and even as hot as three pigs in big purple wigs. This list of how snug he will be keeps being added to all the way up to ten when Mum tells George that he will be tucked up like... Ten toasty geese all sharing one fleece.

George is happy to go to the park after all that persuasion and has a great time. However, when he decides to take off his coat, Mum warns him that he will get too cold:

You'll be like ten sneezy kittens without any mittens,
Or nine frozen frogs in huge wooden clogs.

This time the list that she gives starts at ten and goes all the way down to one freezy fox with holes in his socks. After a lovely day, when George is tucked up happily in bed, he decides that he definitely prefers being snug as a bug!

My daughter and I really enjoyed reading this book and it left us with a bit of a warm glow. The book has so much lovely description which is all backed up by gorgeous illustrations. Many of the ideas and images are very funny too. It is a book that is very rich in language with many wonderful adjectives. It is also a useful book for helping children acquire different words for degrees of hot and cold.

As well as the wonderful language, this is also a great counting book. Not only does it help children count from one to ten; it helps them to count backwards from ten to one as well. I'm sure young children will really enjoy joining in with the counting and will want to return to the colourful snugly characters time and again.

Why not also take a look at The Number Garden by Sara Pinto which is another lovely counting book.
