The girl did cause the car crash: there could be no doubt about that, but she looked very fragile, almost as though she was unaware of what she was doing. She just walked out into the road and then disappeared. But she caused the death of a teenager - and devastation to his family. The girl was a runaway and all she wanted was to return to the man who had given her a home and made her feel safe. There were a lot of rules and it was easy to upset the man if you didn't abide by the rules, but she wasn't being used or abused and nor were any of the other girls who lived with the man. He was called Harm.
The accident was Traffic's problem and they were determined to find the girl, possibly to charge her with manslaughter, but D I Marnie Rome had other thoughts. Then the first body turned up, in what was the old Battersea power station building, in one of the new apartments and she was laid out beautifully. But how did the killer get the body past security and into the apartment? Where is he keeping the girls? Then there was the second body and the sister of the first victim is in danger. Laura's young, feisty and more than a little bit foolhardy.
Oh, but this was a good read. When we join the story DS Noah Jake is already immersed in the disappearance of a young girl, May Beswick. She's a talented artist and the team have to try and track where she's been by analysing her sketches. He's at his wits' end as there have been no sightings and there's no body. It's all very believable and it's intelligent crime that keeps you on the edge of your seat. If I had to be very picky there was one part of the ending which I couldn't completely believe, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of a very good book.
I listened to an audio download (which I bought myself) narrated by Imogen Church. Church and Sarah Hilary make a dream team: exceptional writing delivered by a voice which seems to capture every nuance effortlessly. I can't wait for book four in the series.
