There once was a little bear who was very cheeky. And though he was but little, he was fierce. His signature move was to sneak up on his neighbours and surprise them with a sudden, unexpected…
BOO!
If you're smiling to yourself right now, you're not alone, because the thought of that made me giggle too. Bless. But alas the other animals don't really like it when he does this. He startles them and they sometimes trip or fall or fly beak-first into an iceberg. Oops. Mama and Papa try to tell him to stop but he simply won't listen. After all, it's just a bit of fun, right?
One day though, something serious happens. A film-maker is coming to the Arctic. He's going to shoot a television show there. They will all be famous! How very exciting! Everyone is on their best behaviour but you can guess what happens… a certain little cub still cannot behave. Will he ruin it for everyone?
This a brilliant book for sharing together because there are so many times to join in and yell BOO! which of course they love. It's also bursting with marvellous illustrations by Tony Ross. I defy anyone not to fall in love with the little cub, naughty as he may be.
I rather liked this story. It had a new, never told before feel to it, with the inclusion of the film crew coming to town, and this really jazzed it up. There's great attention to detail, too, like the sunbathing walrus who has a neat can of fizzy pop next to him because who wants to have to get up to go and fetch a drink when you're mid tan? I loved the puffins, too, and the way the polar bears found ways to accessorize (a woollen scarf for baby, a shawl for mama).
All in all, this one is pretty perfect and would make a great gift. Two thumbs up.
Thanks go to the publishers for supplying this book. The awesome twosome previously teamed up on The Slightly Annoying Elephant by David Walliams and Tony Ross, also worth a look. We also liked The Bath Monster by Colin Boyd and Tony Ross.
