Summary: The Bear with Sticky Paws is a delightfully mischievous character that my daughters know and love well having already met him in other books by Clara Vulliamy. He is often found visiting his friend Pearl and generally causing havoc in her house. In this entertaining book Pearl is coming to terms with there being a new baby at home and her sticky pawed friend provides a welcome distraction. However, after spending a day in his company she comes to appreciate her somewhat tamer baby brother much more. | |

When Pearl's new baby brother arrives, she resents the fact that he is the baby and that she is supposed to be the grown-up sister. She tries to persuade her mum that she is still a baby too but with no success. It is at this time that the Bear with Sticky Paws arrives and they decide to play at being babies. The bear excels at making a mess while eating without a spoon, getting Pearl to dress him and scribbling all over her pictures. It is through all of these activities that Pearl comes to realise that she can do so much more than any baby and perhaps she is quite happy being that little bit more grown up after all. By the time the bear leaves, she has completely revised her opinion of her little brother and presents him with a beautifully drawn picture that has no scribbles at all.
This is a delightfully entertaining and funny book and also one that might prove very useful to share with children who are about to get a new little sister or brother. It allows them to explore the sort of feelings that they might have especially the jealousy they might experience. It does also show that having a new baby in the home can also be quite lovely too. Pearl and the bear are also both brilliant characters, full of energy and life, that I feel sure most children will identify with. The story is told with a great deal of humour which is added to by the wonderful illustrations.
You don't have to have read any other stories about the Bear with Sticky Paws in order to enjoy and appreciate this wonderful story. However, if you have read others, you will notice similarities in the style of the books. For example, there are some pages which require a great deal of counting. In this book, there are baby clothes and food items to count and these appear in list form. Young children will definitely enjoy counting all of these things that the bear is using to make a mess. There is also a very familiar chatty style which recurs in all of the books and at the end there is a page that always has a great deal of repetition. In this book the bear keeps repeating the word 'ME!' until Pearl has had enough and shouts at him to stop! My five year old was very pleased with herself when she remarked that it was just like one of the other books that we had read but in that one the repeated word was 'NO!'. For all of these reasons, it felt like we were reading a book that we already knew well.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to The Bookbag.
We definitely recommend this book and I feel sure that your child will want to read more about this wonderful playful bear. Therefore I would suggest taking a look at both The Bear with Sticky Paws and [[The Bear With Sticky Paws Goes To School by Clara Vulliamy|The Bear with Sticky Paws Goes to School].
