Liam Scott has joined Recce Platoon. The recruitment process was more gruelling than Liam had even imagined. But if you're going to be an in-theatre intelligence gatherer for the British Army, then you need to be ready for anything. And despite his training, Liam is new to this game. He still has a lot to learn and he's going to have to do it the hard way - in Kenya, where the border with Somalia is subject to incursions from the al-Shabaab militant group.
Recce Platoon is tasked with training the Kenyan army in dealing with terrorism. But the mission soon turns active, when an a-Shabaab incursion takes several Kenyan soldiers captive, including the brother of one of the guys Liam has been training. And the leader of the group is a radicalised Briton - a top target of Her Majesty's Government.
Can Recce Platoon locate their man and get out undiscovered? Will Liam's training kick in when it's needed?
You can't knock Andy McNab. He turns out easy-to-read page-turners that make many of the popular teen spy thrillers look positively pedestrian. Who wants a junior 007 with silly gadgets when you could have Liam Scott and his merry (well, blunt and politically incorrect) band of brothers? The New Enemy really is a thrill-a-minute. Even the opening training sequences are truly terrifying and exhilarating, and that's before Liam has even got into theatre.
And you can't deny the authentic voice. McNab's stories make Mr Murphy, an ex-soldier himself, feel quite nostalgic for the camaraderie and mickey-taking of army life, and the genuine sense of loyalty too. McNab brings his own life into the story and this series has also been written with the assistance of current serving soldiers.
Don't expect more than a cookie-cutter picture of the enemy, though. You won't get one. The New Enemy is a crash-bang-wallop story of good and evil and it will carry you along at a breathless pace. It'll also give you an accurate picture of what it's like to be a British soldier in this age of the War on Terror.
Fans of non-stop action might also enjoy People's Republic (CHERUB) by Robert Muchamore.
