Ava's parents like to nag. They nag her about her spelling, about eating with her knife and fork, or sitting straight on her chair, or going to bed on time...nag, nag, nag! But then one day she finds a card advertising The Parent Swap Shop and when her parents nag her one more time she packs them off and sets out to find herself a new set of parents!
This early reader book is a lot of fun to read. Parents reading aloud will suspect from the off what is going to happen when Ava swaps her parents, but younger children will enjoy the surprise of seeing what happens when she finds herself with parents who really don't care what she does all day!
The format of the book is perfect for those who are ready for a book with chapters but still need it to be easy enough to follow by themselves. The chapters are short, and there are illustrations throughout which help you figure out what's happening on each page if any of the vocabulary gets tricky. It would probably be best for readers around 7 years old, although younger children will also enjoy having it read aloud. Even though it's a chapter book we read it aloud in less than fifteen minutes, and I had a lot of fun playing all the different parents and doing lots of stroppy nagging!
The illustrations are lots of fun too. I liked all the different parents that are portrayed, as well as the poor parents wrapped up in brown paper ready to be packed off to the swap shop! There's a picture on every page, all in full colour. We all laughed at the picture of Ava lying with her head in her plate of beans on toast, fast asleep! Although the main character is a girl I think this story would work for girls or boys, all of whom will identify with nagging parents. Great to share or to keep children quiet for half an hour as they read by themselves, definitely recommended!
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
Further reading suggestion: Early readers might also enjoy trying Horrid Henry's Thank You Letter by Francesca Simon and Tony Ross or Serious Sas and Messy Magda by Marianne de Pierres and Rachel Annie Bridgen.
