First we had a cute little mouse finding his inner beast in The Lion Inside and then we had a nervous koala trying to move out of his comfort zone in The Koala Who Could and now we have a couple of greedy, fighting squirrels. Whatever next?
Every squirrel knows that a failure to plan is a plan for failure. Every squirrel, it would seem, except for Spontaneous Cyril who would rather leave things to the last minute and just hope for the best. But autumn is coming, and with it a shortage of fresh food for the woodland animals. The smart ones have been foraging and storing up essentials for the winter months, but Cyril was too busy partying (yes, partying! Can you imagine?) and forgot he was supposed to be building his stores. By the time he gets round to it, there is just one pinecone left. It might be his saving grace, but while he prepares to scurry over and swoop it up, he hasn't counted on Bruce, a fellow Sciuridae who also has his eye on the treat. What follows is an all-out battle between the two squirrels for that one treasure. And it's not going to end well.
This is a fast paced, energetic book with a rhyme that bounces off the pages. You can't help but be caught up with the adventure and gallop along with Cyril and Bruce. Don't you just love those names? And they certainly suit the two characters here. Jim Field's illustrations never disappoint, either. Bright colours (with a perfect, autumnal palette here) and characters full of life bring a joyful feel to every page. So much care and attention has gone into this book, and it really pays off. It's delightful to read again and again and each time I find a new detail to marvel over.
I must thank the publishers for sending us a copy to review. It lived up to all my high expectations and is highly recommended. Fans of these animals may also enjoy Scaredy's exploits in Scaredy Squirrel has a Birthday Party by Melanie Watt
