I might live in the middle of the country now, with nothing but pheasants and the odd wild turkey for neighbours, but I remember well what it’s like to live in the hustle and bustle. In fact, unless you too have lived on the main artery of Mexico City in a single-glazed apartment, you’re going to come 2nd in the Who’s lived in a noisier house? competition. Well, it would have been second, but after reading this, I think we’d both have to bump down a spot, because nothing, and I mean nothing, compares to this house.
This is a cumulative story, along the lines of The House That Jack Built. One noise leads to another and another. What a racket! It’s rather tiring for the poor old lady on the ground floor (even if she did start it all!) so she has a little sit-down. But as she stops clomping around with her walking stick, the dog above stops barking. Which helps the cat settle down, the baby stops crying and the birds cease squawking. Peace at last… but for how long?
This is a really fun story that combines repetition and sound effects with great results. The illustrations are kooky, busy and loud, but very clear too, and there’s no doubt that this is a Very Noisy House. The book reads sideways, to allow room for the tall house to span the pages, but it’s quite easy to hold up so you can both enjoy it together.
This is a delightful book that noisy children will love to jabber their way through, but it’s also fun for quieter ones to giggle away to as they snuggle up beside you. Thanks go to the publishers for supplying this fun read.
For a simpler take, Animal Noises by Nicola Killen is an early book on noises that's a hit in these parts. For more about pheasants, try A Practical Present for Philippa Pheasant by Briony May Smith.
