Mr Richmond had been married twice. From his first marriage he had a daughter, Christina and another daughter, Jane from his second marriage. Christina is quiet, sensible, bookish and, in her mid-twenties, with no expectations of matrimony. Jane, or the other hand, is the heiress of her mother's fortune, just a little wild and loves the bright, society life. That's probably not unreasonable as she's not yet twenty and whilst the girls are chalk and cheese they love each other dearly. Christina is pleased when Jane makes a good match – she's to marry Lord St Clement – until she meets her lordship, when she realises that her heart might not be quite so hardened to emotion as she thought.

I loved Christina with her liking for a good book in preference to the social whirl and her willingness to lead a sensible life with her widowed father. There's not an ounce of malice in her and she cares deeply for those around her. She's perhaps a little wary of the dashing balloonist, (balloonatic as her father says rather irately) William Grenfell, who is obviously very taken with her sister. In fact, he's far too taken, given that he's a close friend and neighbour of Lord St clement. Jane doesn't help matters either. She might be about to be betrothed, but that doesn't stop her cavorting across the rooftops of Bath in a balloon with Grenfell.

You know it's not going to work out as society would hope. There are far too many obstacles in the way, not least Jane's unwillingness to be honest about her feelings for the men in her life. You don't read the story to see how it works out but to find out what happens along the way. I did originally think that Lord St Clement would never have agreed to marry a woman, sight unseen, but even that is satisfactorily explained and an exciting finish which had me on the edge of my seat.

I read the book in one sitting in a gloriously lazy Saturday afternoon in the garden. It's not great literature – but there are times when that's not what you want. I was slightly annoyed that an English writer, writing about an English setting and published in England used American spellings, but this was this only thing that marred my enjoyment.

I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
