We've met Tilly Redbrow before. She's of native American Indian descent but living with her adoptive family in the UK. To say that she is mad on horses is something of an understatement – just about everything she does revolves around them. This time she and her friends are having a sleepover at the Silver Shoe Stables, where – although no one is supposed to know about it – a famous racehorse is staying incognito because his history as a Derby winner means that horse thieves are after him.
The Tilly's Pony Tails books are a delightful series which will delight any tween girl who's mad about horses. Written by Olympic medallist Pippa Funnell the horse facts are bang on and there's a good deal of education for your horse-lover in the book which isn't made too obvious. It's also a good story. I'm always slightly concerned that these books are pitched at girls who are already competent readers but in a format which appeals to the emerging reader with the regular use of illustrations to break up the text. Having said that, the girls seem to love them and it's almost certainly me that's being a bit picky.
There's a continuing story of Tilly's search, along with her brother, for more information about their mother, but don't feel that this means that you must read the stories in order or, indeed, read all of them. They all work well as stand-alone books and there's little in the way of the usual marketing which forces you to buy all the books in a series.
They're a quick read but there's enough in the story that they'll probably be reread and nothing to date them so that they can't be passed on the other children – hence the buy recommendation.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
