There are lots of clues to solve and their hunt takes them to a host of different locations before everything falls into place. This is a fabulous book for eagle-eyed little ones who love hunting for things, as well as a great way of encouraging counting, colours and shape recognition.

Tom and Millie are excited they're going on a great, big treasure hunt! They have a list of Very Important Things to find.

This is the opening of this enormously appealing book that draws the young reader in from the very start. The fact that Very Important Things all start with capitals obviously signifies that they are actually extremely important and definitely makes young children want to find out what these momentous objects are going to be. We find out that the search is going to start at the beach and that the first clue will be found on a square red flag. When you get to the beach though there are lots of other things and friends to spot too such as Adam licking a pink ice cream and Jake wearing a red cap.

Once you do spot the red square flag though, you discover that there is another clue written on that which takes you, along with Millie and Sam, on to the next location. In fact, through looking for a whole series of clues, we visit the playground, the party shop, the play centre and the farmers' market. Eventually all clues lead to the Sunnytown Summer Fair where the significance of all the clues becomes apparent.

This is a lovely busy book that has lots going on in all the different locations. The illustrations are all very lively and there are so many things to look for in every one. The reader is given a pointer for some of the things to spot on each page but there is so much more that isn't mentioned too. There's a reasonable amount of text too, with lots of repetition that makes it ideal for emergent readers.

My daughter loves the challenge of finding all of the clues. In the main part of the book, many of these focus on different numbers, shapes and colours. Also, there is a front page before the story starts that asks whether the reader can find all of Tom and Millie's friends of which there are many. Each has a name and their picture is shown. These characters then appear on the various pages and it's great fun trying to find all of them as well as the different objects. This is certainly a book that helps small children hone their powers of observation.

This is a book that is a lot of fun and one that I am sure small children will want to return to again and again.

Another book that requires great skills of observation is Where is Fred? by Edward Hardy and Ali Pye. For another treasure hunt, try Poggle and the Treasure by Michael Evans.
