There's trouble on Corncob Farm. A fox is coming round for tea and poor old Fefferflap is all a flutter because she suspects that she, and all the other farm animals, are on the menu! Can Warduff save the day?
This is really quite a simple story. Warduff goes to the farm to help his friends, has a good idea about how that can defeat the fox which involves poor Geoffrey (the tasty-looking dormouse!) playing bait to the fox before luring him into the corn field where Warduff and the other animals lie in wait. They all have corn cobs on long sticks which they use together, in the dark, to create a monster, called Gronklenork, to scare the fox away. The plans works, and Warduff has saved them all!
The text is quite lively. There's plenty of opportunity for those with a dramatic leaning to play the over-anxious flapping goose sounding the alert about the fox, and I personally enjoyed being Gronklenork the corncob monster, and not just because his name is Gronklenork! It's easy to follow what's happening, and I liked the ending which announces that if you've got friends like Warduff then you usually get a happy ending.
The illustrations really bring this story to life though. Warduff is a pleasingly fat cat, and the leaning tower of farm animals who greet Warduff as he arrives made me smile. Snipe the fox is as sneaky-looking as you'd expect, and I liked the variations between pages with lots of details and other, more expansive and sparse illustrations. Mat Head's style of drawing works well with the story, and I expect we'll see a lot more of his picture books in the future. Definitely a fun read, and one you won't mind repeating.
I'd like to thank the publishers for sending a copy to the Bookbag.
Further reading suggestion: If you like a good fat-cat picture book then look no further than dear old Mog the Forgetful Cat by Judith Kerr.
