Miss Cluck's class are going on a camping trip. They've got a map, butterfly net, binoculars, and a tent. All the class are carrying something, be it Leticia the rabbit, Maxwell the mole or the little mice. Boris the grizzly bear gets to carry alllllllll the heavy stuff - well, Fergus the fox cub couldn't exactly carry a great big tent, could he? This being a camping trip, the class get up to all sorts of adventures and into all sorts of scrapes. Luckily, they have Boris on hand to help them out.
I really enjoyed Bravo, Boris! It builds on the heart-warming original Oh, Boris!, and strikes a similar chord. The group of characters are friendly, charming, and all young children would love to be part of Miss Cluck's class, whether or not they've already started school themselves. Big, strong Boris is frequently called upon to help them out of scrapes, but the mix of the other animals also opens up the possibility for discussions about varied needs and abilities - particularly apt when children are developing at different stages.
Tim Warnes' illustrations are lovely. The animals are sweet and approachable without being unbearably cutesy. It's top quality picture book fare, without being either needlessly artsy or too simplistic. There's plenty going on throughout to reward poring over the pictures, but you can also just let them wash over you as you take in the contented atmosphere of a happy camping trip.
The text is a little longer than the average picture book, making it ideal for sharing with slightly older children, on the cusp of reading to themselves. The vocabulary is clear and direct, whilst also being interesting and engaging, ensuring a wide range of young children will enjoy the tale. There's plenty of action, without it being relentless and hectic. There are ups and downs, heroes, villains, songs, and most importantly, warm snuggling. You'll love it! Recommended.
My thanks to the publishers for sending it to Bookbag.
